Photo Shoots

Des Moines photographer, Raelyn Ramey led our tribe of local vendors on a journey through parts of Iowa to create this road trip wedding. We followed in eager anticipation, knowing that she would fearlessly lead us on a grand adventure… the memories of that day would be etched in my mind, stirring up many thoughts of my past growing up in a small Missouri town.

Rachel Bascom, our model, dons a beautiful boho- style gown, from Sarah Beals, owner of Dame and Maiden.

The flowers, created by Lavender Blue, are a palette of red, pinks, and yellows. Roses speak the main story of this bouquet, but soft snapdragons and silvery seeded eucalyptus tone things down just a bit.

I couldn’t help but snap this photo of the history of Ashton Chapel in Mingo, Iowa. The story goes that a young girl dying of tuberculosis had fond memories of her reading time in this beautiful countryside in the late  1800s. She asked to be laid to rest in this special spot, which was at the end of a wagon trail. Many of her family members soon joined her here. Years later, the town decided to bring a church to this area, to join with the cemetery. For $150, and lots of volunteer labor they made that dream a reality. It’s hard not to try and imagine all of the many trials, tribulations, and joys that were felt and commemorated in this place over the last 130 years. What a story this church could tell!

The curved windows, old paneling, and dark wooden pews reminded me of time spent growing up in a small Methodist church in southern Missouri. I would come to be the organist of that church, playing the pipe organ as a small, 12-year-old girl. I would walk up the street from my grandmother’s house after a morning of hot, fresh pancakes and “fake” coffee to visit my friends, and to accompany the choir. In this church, I would marry my husband and bid my grandmother farewell at her memorial service. I would crush on a boy named Tim, and learn about my faith from a wonderful Sunday School teacher, named Elly. It is in this building that I would learn about life and how to care for others by watching my parents give of their time and talents. The lessons learned and the memories made in this building can never be repeated nor duplicated. Perfect or not, they made me the person I am today.

Models Dalton Kunz and Rachel Bascom “present” themselves at the doors of this wonderful country church, ready to jump on the Harley and ride off in the sunset. Dalton’s formalwear is provided by Skeffingtons in Des Moines.
